Overview

Built in 1707 & 1742, Providence’s oldest house and first historic preservation success story, The Stephen Hopkins House was the place of business and home of a Signer of the Declaration of Independence, his family, and their slaves, for more than four decades. At its original waterfront location, the house was visited twice by George Washington. It is now the only public site illustrating common 18th century life, along the city’s famous “mile of history” on Benefit Street.
