Summer is our favorite time of year at the Downtown Providence Parks Conservancy (DPPC), and we have planned out a summer full of free family fun in Greater Kennedy Plaza. Whether you live or work in downtown Providence, are visiting from out of town, or just looking for something different to do in the city, there is something fun to do in Burnside Park.
Check out these 5 programs that run all summer long.
Storytime + Art in the Park
A partnership with KidoInfo, Storytime + Art in the Park is the city’s only outdoor storytime. Each week the DPPC hosts a different author, illustrator, storyteller or performer who tells stories and inspires a love of reading. This year’s schedule includes Providence favorites such as Len Cabral and Big Nazo. Immediately following Storytime, Art in the Park brings books to life through art projects led by local artist Ricky Katowicz. This year’s theme is The Wonky World of Roald Dahl. Thursdays, 10:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m..
Burnside Music Series + Beer Garden
This free music series transforms downtown Providence’s largest public green into a concert venue for local and regional musicians. The series features a different artist each week, covering a wide range of musical styles. Trinity Brewhouse sets up an outdoor beer garden and Red’s Street Kitchen rolls in with delicious food for those who need a snack. Thursdays, 4:30–7:30 p.m.
Downtown Farmers Market
A partnership with Farm Fresh RI, this unique market brings fresh food from local farms and producers to Kennedy Plaza. This is our one event that runs into the fall through October 31, and is the perfect place to stop on your way home to pick up something fresh for dinner. Tuesdays, 3–6 p.m.
Play in the Park
Play in the Park, another partnership with KidoInfo, runs in Burnside Park through August. Held during the Farmer’s Market, Play in the Park features a different family-friendly activity each week that ranges from fun with science, to music and dance. Tuesdays, 3–6 p.m.
Food Truck Market
Summer is the best time of year to get outside for lunch, and we’ve curated a delicious schedule of food trucks. Parked along Washington Street, just outside of Burnside Park, different food trucks join us each day. This year, we have favorite trucks such as Rocket Fine Street Food, GottaQ BBQ and many others. Tuesdays–Fridays, 11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m.
