The iconic Providence Performing Arts Center (PPAC) is celebrating its 90th birthday this year on Saturday, Oct. 13, with a day full of festivities. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the theater was originally opened as a Loew’s State Movie Palace on Oct. 6, 1928. The opulent theater quickly became known as the “Jewel of Weybosset Street.” Maintaining the architectural beauty on the interior and exterior, the theater today serves as the top choice for touring Broadway productions and contemporary shows, including quite a few national tour launches.
The birthday celebration on Oct. 13 is free to all and takes place at the theater. Visitors are only required to RSVP. The festivities begin at 10 a.m. with two theater tours with General Manager Alan Chille. Bring along the family to enjoy a special magic show with Mike Super at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
PPAC is excited to offer an anniversary stage performance featuring local celebrity Billy Gilman, along with School of Rock Attleboro and Peter Krasinski on the Mighty Wurlitzer. These performances will take place inside the theater beginning at 11:45 a.m. through 1 p.m. The day concludes with singing “Happy Birthday” and cupcakes for all.
