What's 30 feet tall and made of bamboo? Nope, it's not a giant breakfast buffet for pandas. It's one of the six Big Beautiful Bamboo Birds that recently "landed" at Bristol's Blithewold estate. The birds are the creation of the Myth Makers, Donna Dodson and Andy Moerlein, and are located throughout the grounds, including a hidden surprise in the Bamboo Grove.
A free Opening Reception is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 21, from 1–3 p.m. to celebrate their arrival. Stroll the grounds, meet the artists and enjoy some food and drinks. Can't make it to the opening? Not to worry. The avian-inspired sculptures will remain at Blithewold until next summer.
Blithewold is more than just giant birds. Entrance admission includes access to the mansion, garden and grounds. Originally the summer home of the Van Wickle family, the mansion gives visitors a peek into life in the early 19th century. Outdoors, the 33-acre grounds include gardens, paths for walking, and plenty of benches and tables for picnicking.
From afternoon tea to wine tastings, art exhibits to drawing classes, and the annual Christmas at Blithewold festivities, there is always something happening at the estate. See below for upcoming events.
