Chicken Scratch: Independent Retailer Month

Cheers to the red, white and blue! (Especially the Red, wink, wink.) This July we're saluting Independents. Retailers that is, not my pal at the State House (although we love the Independent Man). While you're hatching your holiday plans, read on for ways to celebrate Independent Retailer Month and Buy Local RI. And, remember, if you are lighting any sparklers, be careful. Try not to singe any feathers.

While the country is celebrating Independence Day with fireworks, parades and cookouts, we're taking it as a reminder to celebrate the independent businesses that make our community great. Join us and support the local independent retailers near you on the Fourth of July and all month long.

Buy Local

Head to Dave's Fresh Marketplace for all your BBQ fixings or grab some great pre-made apps to keep your guests happy while you fire up the grill. Over on the East Side, you can pop into Seymour Foods on Wickenden Street. They even make local deliveries on Fridays. Guests with allergies? No worries — check out May's Gluten Free Market in East Providence for all kinds of gluten-free goodies.

Don't forget the drinks! Head to Campus Fine Wines, Federal Hill Wines & Spirits or Jordan's Liquors to stock your coolers. Or hit up a brewery for some local beers — and have a pint on the patio while you peruse their selections.

Dave's Marketplace

With local goodies like Aunt Carrie's Clam Cake & Fritter Mix, Catanzaro's Egg Biscuits, Dave's Coffee and more, you can pick up a taste of home to send to those far-away friends and family who are missing their Little Rhody favorites.
