The Providence Bruins are celebrating a big milestone this year — the 25th anniversary of their 1999 Calder Cup championship win. Thanks to a last-minute ticket, I was there for game 5, cheering them on. I still have the championship T-shirt somewhere, in a box with a "Somethin's Bruin in Providence" bumper sticker, a commemorative key chain from the first game in 1992, a puck or two and the 20-odd ticket stubs from the games I went to with my college roommates. One friend had a crush on the goalie, and another eventually refused to sit next to me because I would only talk to her in between periods or if the action on the ice stopped.
Although I don't go as often as when I was a student, I do try to get to a game or two every season. With theme nights like St. Patrick's Day, Star Wars Night and First Responders Weekend coming up, there's usually an event or giveaway to add to the hockey fun. One, in particular, is even for a good cause.
The upcoming Teddy Bear Toss on March 10 is a great way to support the team and Hasbro Children's Hospital. Presented by Re-Bath, the Teddy Bear Toss encourages fans to bring their own teddy bear or purchase a special edition Team Logo teddy bear for $10. When the P-Bruins score their first goal, fans are encouraged to fill the ice with bears. All tossed teddy bears, along with the proceeds from purchased bears, will be donated to Hasbro Children's Hospital and other P-Bruins Community Partners.
