From July 30–31, Mars will be the closest it's ever been to Earth. And by close, we mean 35.78 million miles away. To put it into local terms, that's 745,416 Rhode Islands laid end to end, or our beautiful coastline stretched out straight 93,177 times.

To catch a view of Mars in and around Providence you won't need any special telescope or binoculars, just your eyes. Mars will appear as a bright red "star" towards the east every evening, and towards the west before dawn.
