October is RI Archaeology Month. Can You Dig It?
We've heard it called Rocktober, and even Socktober, but this year we're also celebrating Archtober. Presented by the Rhode Island Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission (RIHPHC), Rhode Island Archaeology Month features a series of free events around the state, highlighting its rich archaeological heritage.
Providence history buffs can get hands-on at "Community Archaeology Day" on Oct. 24 at Brown University. Guests can attend a free archaeology-themed open house on the university's main green, featuring ancient coins, animal bones, pre-historic tools and more. Brown's archaeologists will be on hand to talk about their excavations around the world.
Additional statewide presentations include events at Neutaconkanut Hill Park and Old Slater Mill, an archaeology tour of Blackstone River State Park and more.
For a full calendar and detailed descriptions of all events, visit the RIHPHC website.
