WaterFire Providence
Providence's signature event is WaterFire, an award-winning fire sculpture installation on the three rivers in downtown Providence. Created by local artist Barnaby Evans, WaterFire has become a must-see for visitors.
The string of fires illuminates nearly two-thirds of a mile of urban public spaces and parks, as residents and visitors gather to stroll along the river, listening to music and watching performances. Boats pass quietly before the flames, as black-clad performers tend the fires from sunset to midnight.
WaterFire is an experience that surrounds viewers on all sides and impacts all five senses. The crackling flames, the scent of blazing cedar and pine, the flickering firelight on the arched bridges, the silhouettes of the fire tenders, the flotilla of performers traveling along the river in torch-lit vessels, and the extraordinary music from all over the world engage all of the senses and evoke emotions from the many thousands who come to stroll along the river walks.
WaterFire is typically held May through November, on Saturday evenings about twice a month. The event is free and the public is encouraged to attend.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is WaterFire free to attend?
Yes, admission to WaterFire is completely free and open to the public. WaterFire is a nonprofit, so donations are welcomed and encouraged. You can give at one of the Guest Stations set up throughout the park. Donors are typically offered a small memento (like a Ribbon of Light) as a thank-you.
- When does WaterFire happen?
WaterFire typically runs May through December, with lightings held roughly twice a month, mostly on Saturday evenings. There are a few different formats:
Full Lightings: the complete installation, running from sunset until midnight
Basin/Partial Lightings: a shorter version, focused on the Waterplace Basin area
Starts at Sunset: smaller, standalone events held on the Michael S. Van Leesten Memorial Bridge
Check the current-year schedule on the official site, since specific dates and start times shift from month to month based on sunset.
- How long does a lighting last?
Full Lightings generally run from sunset until midnight, around 4 to 4.5 hours total, though the fires themselves take time to light and burn down. Basin/Partial Lightings are shorter, typically closer to an hour.
- Where exactly does WaterFire take place?
A full WaterFire lighting stretches for about a half-mile along the Providence and Woonasquatucket Rivers in downtown Providence, from Providence Place Mall to the Crawford Street Bridge. The official address for GPS purposes is 4 N. Main Street, Providence, RI 02903.
- Will WaterFire be canceled if it rains?
WaterFire is a rain-or-shine event, and light rain or wind typically won't stop it. It's only canceled for serious weather concerns, like severe thunderstorms, high winds, or dangerous river conditions. If there's a cancellation, it's usually announced by early-to-mid afternoon on the day of the event via the official WaterFire website and social channels, worth checking before you head downtown.
- Where should I park?
Providence is a very walkable city, and several options work well for WaterFire:
Providence Place Mall has a large, convenient garage right at one end of the installation.
Street parking is available around College Hill, Benefit Street, and the East Side, though it fills up fast; arriving 30–60 minutes early is recommended.
Downtown hotel guests can typically leave the car in the hotel garage and walk to the event.
Note that some of the larger lots get congested with exit traffic around 10 pm, so you may want to linger a bit before heading to your car.
- Is WaterFire within walking distance of downtown hotels?
Yes. If you're staying at one of the Downtown Providence hotels, WaterFire is within easy walking distance, so there's no need to drive at all.
- Are dogs allowed?
Leashed dogs are generally welcome along the riverwalks. Because the crowds, open flames, and smoke can be a lot for some pets, it's worth considering your dog's temperament before bringing them, and bringing water for them.
