Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the pedestrian bridge?

The bridge crosses the Providence River, linking the Fox Point neighborhood on the East Side to 195 District Park and the Innovation & Design District. The west side is accessible from Dyer Street near Ship Street, and the east side from South Water Street near James Street.

Who is the bridge named after?

It opened in August 2019 and was renamed in July 2020 to honor Michael S. Van Leesten, a local civil rights advocate. It’s built on repurposed granite piers that once supported I-195.

What events happen at the bridge and 195 District Park?

The area hosts events year-round, including the Providence Flea on summer Sundays, Rhode Island PrideFest each June and WaterFire’s Starts at Sunset gatherings on the bridge. New events are added throughout the year, so check back often.

What is there to do on the bridge?

The wooden deck features benches, built-in chessboards and illuminated tables, and its skyline views make it one of the city’s most popular photo spots.
